Solidarity action for the Tuareg guide during the pandemic
To start the year 2022 under the sign of solidarity, we were organizing a solidarity action.
This action had permitted to buy 6 camels for Moussa
Purchasing young camels for our guide Moussa.
Due to the health situation during the pandemic, all our treks departing from Djanet in Algeria have been suspended, leaving our guides and local teams without work and income.
The absence of treks in the Tassili means a lack of resources to live. Moussa, a friend and guide whom I consider a brother, has been organizing treks in the Sahara with me for many years, and he was going through a difficult period that has persisted since the beginning of Covid.
While waiting to return to Djanet with my groups, and during these challenging times for him, I naturally decided to help him and plan to materialize this action.
After consultation together, the purchase of small camels seemed to be the best option for Moussa to restart a pastoral activity, a sustainable source of income.
Moussa will be able to invest more in breeding. The 6-year-old camels that Moussa can acquire will grow until approximately 30 years old, producing milk and giving birth to the next generation.
Moussa will then be able to lead these camels to graze in the pastures. This is a valuable investment suitable for the semi-nomadic life of the Kel Ajjer Tuaregs, the indigenous population of this region of the Central Sahara.
The desert is Moussa’s home, and this activity will allow him to rediscover the traditional way of life on the vast expanses of the Tassili, following the transhumance of his camels.
These complementary breeding activities, in addition to his guiding profession, had provide Moussa with income during periods without treks and helped him to keep independant from tourism which assure you to explore Sahara with passion !
